Learn How to Declutter Responsibly

Posted on September 16, 2015 in Tips

For many, the idea of having fewer things around the house sounds very appealing. Just think about it—less to clean, less to trip over, less to worry about, less to organize, and a bonus may be less debt. Getting rid of all that stuff can seem like a pretty overwhelming experience, but it doesn’t have to be. If you are ready to take the purging plunge, here are some great decluttering tips to help you free up more space in your home.

Make a Plan

The first thing you want to do is create a game plan. Whether you need a few hours or an entire day, organizing a declutter schedule will help you know where to begin, with the added bonus of keeping you motivated.

Start Small

Focus on one room at a time, starting with what’s more visible. As tempting as it might be, avoid turning your entire home upside down. The mess can quickly spiral out of control and put a damper on your decluttering goals. Remember—slow and steady wins the race!

Get Help

Decluttering your house can be a tedious task (and a lonely one too). Recruiting the help of your roommates, friends, or family members will not only speed up the process, but also make it much more fun. So, order up some pizza, turn up the music, and get the decluttering party started!

Grab and Toss

Now that you have a plan and the help of some friends, you can begin by getting rid of some of the more trivial items you have laying around your home. Grab a box or a big trash bag and fill them up with old magazines, shoes, empty bottles, or any other knick-knacks that you have been wanting to throw out. This is also a good time to get rid of any furniture you no longer use or need.

Sort through Your Stuff

Dump all of the things you are planning to get rid of in the middle of the room. Next, you’ll want to put your items into four separate boxes—a box for things you’ll store, two others for the items you want to sell or donate, and the last box for stuff you plan to toss out, making sure to recycle whenever possible.

Decluttering does not have to be an endless-seeming battle. With a little planning and some good friends, you will have tons of extra space in no time!
